The BNP is looking for a suitable mayoral candidate with clean image after having agreed to contest the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) poll. The election is due to be held by February next year, according to party leaders.

The mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq. The mayor election would be a huge challenge for the BNP ahead of the next general election, said party leaders. A number of senior BNP leaders declined to comment on the party’s prospective candidate. They said the matter depended on party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Some leaders said they would like Khaleda Zia to choose a person with a clean image and not involved in any financial scandal. A highly-placed source, however, said the party might ask either Tabith Awal, who contested the last mayoral election, or BNP adviser Maj. (Retd) Quamrul Islam to contest the election.

The names of BNP assistant international affairs secretary barrister Rumin Farhana and special secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon also came up in the discussion for the mayoral post. Standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, however, said the party was yet to decide on the party candidate. “Our leaders will sit together and decide on the matter only after the election schedule is announced,” he added.

“The party is likely to field a candidate in line with its previous stand. However, we’re are yet to discuss the matter in the party forum,” he said.
Replying to a question, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the party would definitely choose a person who was the most likely to win the poll.
A senior vice-chairman of the BNP, who wanted not to be named, said the party would take part in the DNCC polls.
Asked whether the party would choose Tabith Awal for the mayoral candidate, the BNP leader replied in the negative. “Awal’s name was in the Paradise Papers, and the party will not choose anyone caught up in a financial scandal,” he added.

The party should consider a person like Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, or barrister Rumin Farhana, or a civil society member with a clean image for the election, he opined. Another party vice-chairman, advocate Mahbub Hossain, said the by-election would be crucial for the party ahead of the next general poll. “We hope the chairperson will pick up a person who is not corrupt, has a clean image, and is accepted by people,” he added.

He said all party leaders and activists would like to work for such a candidate to ensure victory.
